Marina Abramovic is Present: Catch up on the long-suffering lady…

marina-abramovic

In case you’ve been vacationing on the moon of late, you will have noticed a certain buzz about London’s Serpentine Gallery. Whilst it’s true that these summer months often bring about ice-cream clad tourists queueing for the seemingly one and only loo in the whole of Hyde Park, this summer the queue outside the Serpentine Gallery actually appears to be art-related. Marina Abramovic, performance artist and international superstar, known for her long-durational performances, is in residence until the 25th August performing her new piece, entitled ‘512’. If you hop along, you may not only get to set your eyes upon her, but she may even take you by the hand and shuffle you into a corner to face the wall like the naughty girl/boy you are.

In preparation, sit in front of this DVD for several hours (steadily increase the length of your sitting, day by day, until finally you are able to open the box, load the disc and press play. This may take up to 512 hours in itself and is, no doubt,  in fact an exercise Marina recommends her own students…):

marina_350x517

If, on the other hand, you are not planning a pilgrimage to visit ‘Marina Teresa’ in the park (perhaps you’ve seen the faithful masses, cassocks and all, making the arduous journey passed Kensington Palace, stopping, not for photos, but to beg for alms to help them reach their glorious destination, the demonically named Serpentine Gallery), then take the pilgrimage to your local video shop instead, stick a pizza in the oven and get stuck in to a bit of high-brow sitting.

It is actually very good. (And, no doubt, also very good for your soul.)

NON-STOP:

non-stop-poster-neeson

If you’re looking for a tense-cum-silly thriller, Non-Stop looks promising. It marks the first time I’ve felt anything more than complete indifference to Neeson’s reinvention as an action hero. I might even watch the actual film. These are some selling points culled from various reviews: a “solid premise and tense setup” … an “absurd, Looney Tunes logic” … Neeson’s “enormous conviction” … cinema “no more or less than what it intends to be” … action “ridiculously entertaining”. Tom Shone’s Guardian  review is what’s really sold me though – he says of Neeson, “He’s at his best striding up and down the aisles of the aircraft with that big, rolling gait of his, carving out great wads of air with his hands, barking orders, his face in Rodin-ish profile, his destiny, like Mitchum’s, enlivened by a nobility far greater than the film he finds himself in – the true sign of a B-movie king.”

THE ROCKET:

TheRocketPoster

Critically acclaimed Australian drama set and shot in Laos. Seems verrry sentimental. Too sentimental? You tell me. I’m going to go out on a limb and recommend this to anyone who enjoyed that sketchy dollop of condescension with François Cluzet in a wheelchair.

RIDE ALONG:

ride-along-movie-poster-7

Oink, oink, oink. Ice “Fuck the Police” Cube plays a cop, again. Hmm. It’s okay though, in interviews he’s explained how playing a cop in a film isn’t the same as actually being a cop, and that playing one is okay as long as you get paid millions of dollars to do it. Phew, I was worried he’d sold out! Ride Along looks kind of funny and I like the part in the trailer where he bashes someone’s head into a glass display case.

AS I LAY DYING:

As-I-Lay-Dying-poster

A trying and cynical effort by James Franco. Because he has money, he keeps doing these ‘projects’. They invariably entail the pillaging of texts by – and hagiographies of – ‘fellow’ creatives: Hal Crane (The Broken Tower), Sal Mineo (Sal), River Phoenix (My Own Private River), Leathermen (Interior. Leather Bar.), there are more. In principle I don’t object to this. I can enjoy ripped off work and am open to glaring narcissism. The problem is that Franco isn’t a creative. The aforementioned films are weak, confused and full of pretense. Franco, with all that money in the banko, is a dingleberry. He is a dingleberry hanging from a calculated set of legacies that he has decided will constitute his practice, his ego and his arrogance. Accordingly his narcissism and his work (they’re actually the same thing) are uninteresting because they don’t refer back to anything more than the unexceptional curiosity of a literate and overpaid actor. The same goes for his academic, artworld and writerly endeavours. I’m running the risk of caring too much here and so to the film in hand. As I Lay Dying has Franco take on (he co-adapted the script) William Faulkner’s oft said ‘unfilmable’ novel. The original prose – damp and crinkly, nice – gets mangled; the film is dry, flat and inept.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)

MV5BMTQ0NzU4NjQ5N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzM1MTQ3NA@@._V1_SY1023_CR26,0,630,1023_AL_Review by Rob Munday

Following the re-issue of Michael Cimino’s flawed opus, Heaven’s Gate, comes the crisp Blu-Ray revival of his debut Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (also available on DVD).

The star-name here, however, was not the tyro director, but its grizzled star, Clint Eastwood. This is an odd-couple-road-movie-cum-comic-crime-caper concerning Clint’s stolid old crook and Jeff Bridges’ eager chancer.

Thunderbolt & Lightfoot

c44a595b8c1b9ee6dab05f8ddb407fd0

It’s an enjoyably hokey adventure in which our heroes stay on the move pursued by inept gunmen on both sides of the law.

This is Clint in comic knockabout mode clearly indicating his move toward the slapstick orangutan hi-jinks of Every Which Way But Loose and its successors (that also featured the ‘just been caught with his pants down’ face of Geoffrey Lewis). Both Eastwood and Bridges add weight to underwritten roles. Clint’s Thunderbolt is gruff gravitas in slacks, a tough individualist forced into sharing a ride. As his fresh-faced companion, Bridges’ Lightfoot is an affront to this typical Eastwood persona. He showers Thunderbolt with love and affection – determined to make the granite face crack a smile.

thunderbolt-and-lightfoot-pals

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is 1970s America in the sunshine: the glory of the open road, the windswept haircuts, the Honky Tonk soundtrack, a brief appearance by Gary Busey, and an attitude to women that’s equivalent to a seaside dirty postcard. In fact the whole venture is a postcard from another time with lovingly captured panoramic vistas and an enduring holiday mood.

thunderbolt2

For a director known for his excesses this is a modest but defiantly epic work. There was no way Clint would put up with doing fifty takes and whilst this film belongs more to the star than it’s writer/director, Cimino does bring a sure-handed grandness to proceedings. Although very different in tone, you can’t help but notice the hints of Cimino’s future work: the close attention on a few circling characters all set against a vast canvas; the adoration of the American landscape and push toward the mythical. Despite the quality on show here you get the nagging feeling that Cimino already had one eye on the icy peaks of Pennsylvania and those elusive deer. Great things were to come and you can sense the optimism in the air.

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN:

The-Invisible-Woman-posterDirected by and starring Ralph Fiennes, The Invisible Woman is about the secret love affair between Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan, which lasted for thirteen years until his death in 1870. Looks nice and delicate. Writing on Roger Ebert’s website, Godfrey Cheshire describes how in Feinnes’ hands, “very little is stated in a straightforward or obvious way. It’s almost as if he took Abi Morgan’s screenplay … and stripped away its most utilitarian dialogue, leaving only hints and suggestions of emotions that then must be fleshed out by the actors. The method … makes for a narrative that’s constantly evocative, mysterious, almost impressionistic, and that involves the viewer in the pleasurably engrossing game of puzzling out the characters’ aim and motives.” The one to watch.

ENDLESS LOVE:

kinopoisk.ruListen to the horrible, faux-weird cover of Robert Palmer’s, legitimately creepy, Addicted to Love accompanying the trailer below. Like fingers prying down my throat, it induced this curious little poem:

Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love
Might as well face it, endless love
Face it, you’re addicted
Endless love
Endless love
Might as well, you’re addicted
Endless love, you’re addicted to love
Might as well face it, you’re addicted to love

Now of course read into it what you will, but here’re my two cents. That hourglass shape simply must infer Time as theme. Couple that with the annoying and repetitious language of love and addiction and I think a meaning starts teasing out. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME ENSLAVED TO ENDLESS LOVE.
