The big one of the week. Get your reservations in. I haven’t caught it yet, but Dixie has. (thanks, Will! – Dixie)
Looks like someone went and made a film indulging mysomeone’s teenage fantasy of writerly genius and sex on the sexy English teacher’s desk. Accordingly, the trailer is shot through with cliché. That being said, ever-alluring Julianne Moore does have the necessary authoritative yet caring air, plus the bone structure and legs, to lend that fantasy some feature-length credibility. Also, Nathan Lane camping it up is usually a plus, as too are Greg Kinnear’s unhateable face and pepper spray gags.
FOR THOSE IN PERIL:
Promising drama from young British director Paul Wright. Aaron (George MacKay) is the lone survivor of a fishing accident in which five men are lost off the coast of a remote Scottish village. Vilified by and estranged from his community, Aaron floats like debris between myth and reality – drawn mysteriously to “the devil in the ocean”.
THE AMERICANS SEASON 1:
Critically acclaimed series about two Soviet KGB officers, posing as a married couple, who live next door to an FBI Counterintelligence agent in the suburbs of DC. Apparently balancing procedural and historical accuracy with nuanced characterisation and moral complexity, it’s definitely lent some auto-legitimacy as the creation and production of former CIA officer Joe Weisberg. According to Gail Pennington of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “‘The Americans’ makes Cold War hot”! But, it “isn’t just a heart-pounding action drama; by presenting heroes who are also villains, it also confronts viewers with TV’s deepest moral dilemma since ‘The Sopranos'”! High praise indeed. Must say that the hammer and sickle C in the title card looks strong, no doubt.
