It’s a mammoth week so make a cuppa, steady yourself, and peruse the following at you leisure…
ONLY GOD FORGIVES:
Refn and Gosling re-team after their previous neon hit Drive. This one concerns vengence, violence and sexual hang-ups set against the backdrop of Bangkok’s underworld. Style over substance?- Absolutely. The script is undercooked, the film doesn’t hold together, but it looks great, Gosling does a good job of wearing a suit, and Kristin Scott Thomas is fantastic as the mum you wouldn’t cross.
ALAN PARTRIDGE: ALPHA PAPA:
The odds were against it but Steve Coogan and co have made a properly funny big screen vehicle for Mr A. Partridge. Sour grapes at North Norfolk Digital radio station lead to a hostage situation – can Alan save the day?
Gargantuan budgeted adventure-comedy took a critical mauling but has had some notable defenders. From the director who bought you all the Pirates of the Caribbean films and the actor who starred in Cry Baby.
Legendary documentary make John Pilger examines the troubled history between the Aborigine and white population in Australia.
Love and dance collide in this new Brit flick that won the top award at the Raindance Film Festival.
